LAB ACTIVITY "SPECTROSCOPES"

PURPOSE: To look for differences in the visable light spectrum by comparing and analyzing several different light sources using spectroscopes.

MATERIALS:

Pencil

Notebook

Crayons or colored pencils

Spectroscope

Lightsources ( Mr. A will have a variety of these for you in class )

DIRECTIONS: In the following lab exercise you and a partner(s) are going to be experimenting with a variety of light sources using a spectroscope. While using this instrument you are NEVER to look directly at any of the light sources. INSTEAD you will be looking to the side of the light source. ( Mr. Andrews will demonstrate the correct way to do this in class).

STEP 1:

One person from each group should get the needed materials from Mr. A and bring them back to the lab table.

STEP 2:

Once you have all the materials at your lab desk, and you have read all the directions. You are ready to start.

STEP 3:

Check the whiteboard to see what light sources Mr. Andrews wants you to use, and write them down in the appropriate areas on your lab data sheet.

STEP 4:

(Spectroscopes)-Use these with each of the light sources by adjusting the position of the scope relative to your eye. (Mr. A will demonstrate the proper technique in class before the lab). This will allow you to adjust the clarity of the spectrums. Remember to look at the sides of the light source, and not directly at the light.

Record all data and observations that you collect from experimenting with each light source on your lab data sheets, and you are to draw a colored sketch of each of the spectrums that you observed with each different light source. When you are done, answer the conclusion questions. Remember that the conclusion questions need to be answered in full complete sentences and that spelling counts.

ALL WRITTEN DATA, OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS SHOULD BE DONE ON SCRAP PAPER FIRST. ONLY YOUR FINAL WORK SHOULD BE WRITTEN UP ON THE LAB DATA SHEETS.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLICK ON THE " LAB DATA SHEET", and "CONCLUSION QUESTIONS" ON THIS PAGE SO THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD A COPY OF EACH.
